The Grand Central Terminal is a link between the Metro-North Railroad and New York City Transit systems; it serves as a transit hub for New York City. The Grand Central - 42nd Street Station is located next to the Grand Central Terminal. Due to the increase and anticipated increase in passengers, the project provided flow optimization.

The following is a list of the project scope: the development of a new passageway that links to the current passageway; a new staircase; and the expansion of the two current stairways. The expansion of the two current stairways provided greater access and exit for passengers entering and exiting the platform level. The new passageway and stairs were supplied with new lighting, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and emergency help point telephones. Furthermore, the widened stairways have new handrails and guardrails.
