The Chambers Street Station project included the installation of new elevators; the station is completely accessible for customers with disabilities. The work for the project took two years and was completed on time and within budget. In addition, three new ramps were installed in the station’s mezzanine, and many style upgrades were made.
The project will allow customers with disabilities to access the Chambers Street mezzanine from the street level elevator in the Brooklyn Bridge / City Hall station. Also, an additional pair of accessible ramps leading to the J and Z platform elevators were installed.

Platforms were altered to lessen the gaps between platform edges and trains. A new feature of the complex includes a new pedestrian bridge across the J and Z tracks in the station; this would allow for more smooth access to both platforms. The original turnstile area was redesigned to make certain that the turnstiles are at a wheelchair-friendly height.
To accommodate the ramps, new stairs, the pedestrian bridge, the new elevators and their electrical components, sections of the mezzanine and current station facilities have been redesigned or completely removed.

In addition, supplementary station repairs and enhancements, including extensive water mitigation work and infrastructure upgrades to platforms, floors, and columns are scheduled for the Chambers St station, serving the J and Z lines.
